Abstract:

The purpose of the work is to determine the features, regularities and indices of the soil volume and mass washed away by thawed, rain (storm) and irrigation waters which are necessary for the development of an express method for determining the mass of eroded soil in the course of erosion processes on the basis of instrumental field studies. Soil erosion is affected by biotic and abiotic factors: climate, vegetation, relief, physical condition of soil, granulometric composition, soil conservation measures, etc. To prevent soil erosion constant control and monitoring of agricultural land erosion is necessary to develop and carry out soil conservation measures timely. 35 objects (land plots) with soil erosion in Rostov Region and the Stavropol Territory were investigated under field conditions. Mathematical and statistical data processing made it possible to reveal the development patterns of soil erosion processes, to find the locations of sections and their necessary number in gullies (places of soil erosion) to determine the depth, width and sectional area of the gully and calculate the volume and mass of the washed soil. It has been found to obtain reliable data on the eroded soil mass, transverse sections in gully must be laid starting from its top, the distance between the sections should not exceed 50 m and the interval (step) of measurements of the gully’s depth in the profile section should be no more than 5–8 cm. The data are needed to determine the cross-sectional area of the section profile and to calculate the volume and mass of the washed out soil.
